What is CoMBaT Insomnia?

The CoMBaT Insomnia is a study for adults who are current or former uniformed service members. We are comparing the effectiveness of two non-medication therapies for sleep disturbance to determine which is better at reducing symptoms of insomnia and depression in people who sustained a  Traumatic Brain Injury and have trouble sleeping. 

Two interventions are (1) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and (2) Mindfulness Based Therapy for Insomnia. Both interventions will be delivered via telehealth during participants' off-duty hours.

Who is running the study?

The CoMBaT Insomnia Study is coordinated by Johns Hopkins University in collaboration with the Uniformed Services University under the sponsorship of the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical and Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Programs.

Who can participate in the study?
  • Current or former member of the uniformed services.
  • Meet the VAMC/DoD criteria for TBI
  • At least 3 months since head injury
  • At least 3 months of insomnia
  • 18 year of age or older

How long does the study last?

The study will involve 6 telehealth sessions over the course of 6 weeks. There will be 3 follow-ups: 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks after the end of treatments. Participants will be in the study for approximately 24 weeks. 

What is the compensation for the study?

Participants can get compensated up to $600 - depending on eligibility and study visits/tasks completed.
